Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins Vs. Spider Veins

Cardiologists are specialists of the heart and its function. However, they are also qualified to treat varicose veins due to their extensive training in catheter-based procedures. While a dermatologist can treat the aesthetic side of varicose veins, they cannot treat the root of the problem like a cardiologist can. Whether from pregnancy or from a profession that requires you to stand most of the day, there are many reasons why varicose veins may form, but, here at Northeast Houston Vein Center, Dr. Madaiah Revana is here to help eliminate this issue no matter what the cause.

What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are normal veins which have become swollen due to the valves which allow blood to flow through the vein becoming weakened. They normally occur on the feet or legs and often appear as blue or purple, lumpy veins. They may also appear to bulge out of the skin or twist. In addition to their tell-tale appearance, varicose veins can also cause symptoms like causing the legs to ache or have a heavy feeling and cause the ankles and feet to swell. Varicose veins are often hereditary.

Varicose Veins Vs. Spider Veins
Though they are often confused, varicose veins and spider veins are not one in the same. Both conditions are caused by the backup of blood in the veins but present themselves differently. Unlike varicose veins’ swollen and twisted appearance, spider veins are small, wiry veins which also often appear on the legs.

Why should I see my Humble, TX cardiologist about my varicose or spider veins?
Varicose and spider veins are normally considered aesthetic but are a symptom of a problem with the cardiovascular system. Though common and often treated in just a simple inpatient procedure, if left untreated, these conditions can cause other more complex issues. Your cardiologist can assess your symptoms and situation and ensure that you receive the best treatment for you.

Varicose Vein Treatments
Fortunately, there are many ways that our Northeast Houston Vein Center cardiologist can recommend treating your condition including:

  • Compression socks or stockings to improve blood flow through the legs and ankles (great for those with mild cases)
  • Laser or radiofrequency ablation, which heats up and destroys the vein to redirect blood flow to healthier veins
  • Sclerotherapy, which injects a solution into the veins to cause them to collapse and fade
  • Minor surgery to remove smaller veins that start to form out of a larger vein

We would be happy to sit down with you and discuss the best option for treating your varicose veins. By treating these veins early on we can prevent painful ulcers from forming.
